Thank you to all of the participants for the fall Junior On Course season. We had our largest group ever for the program and look forward to building on its’ success. With winter coming, the junior program for the next couple of months is going to consist of having a number of small groups that meet on a regular basis. We call this “Tiger Training” (I know, I need to find a new name). Basically the groups consists of 3 to 6 juniors that are close to the same age and equally matched in skills. We set a regular time each week and based on the group’s needs we tailor a program for them to improve and fall in love with the game. We play the course, practice putting, work on the swing while utilizing our indoor facility when the weather does not allow us to go outside. Hopefully before Thanksgiving we will have a new putting course installed in the learning center with new carpet to help develop solid putting skills.
My teaching philosophy for the kids 12 and under is basically to get them playing the game, make it fun and make sure they have a good fundamental base to go to the next level. I believe that the “Tiger Training” program allows this to happen and would love to have your golfer participate.
As we go into the spring, I would encourage you to get your junior involved in the Roanoke Valley Junior Golf Association (www.RVJGA.com). The RVJGA is the first step to playing competitive golf and is a great way to get them hooked. We will continue the Junior On Course program starting in March of 2012.
If you would like to give your junior individual attention, I offer private lessons to juniors at a discounted rate ($30). The indoor learning center offers a great opportunity to work on the swing and be ready for the spring. Teaching the kids is one of the great joys in being a golf professional. It is very rewarding to have kids experience success in playing the game but the biggest feeling of accomplishment is when you know you make a difference if their lives. My PGA Professional did that for me and I hope to do the same for your golfer.
The success of the Junior on Course program this fall was due to my high school golfers helping out and I am grateful for their time. A “Thank You” goes out to Austin Smith, Garrett Sweeney, Cody Caldwell, Jack Henry, Harry Preas and Brandon Lusk. New for 2012, we will be introducing “Caddy Sitting” – it is kind of like babysitting but the time is spent on the golf course as these high school golfers supervise the little ones as they play the game. The guys that helped this fall have all taken lessons from me so they understand the fundamentals. I will assist in arranging the times. More details to come……
